Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
