Approximately 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests suggest the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
