World Health Organization Issues Concern Over Critical Shortage of Weight-Loss Injections

Under 10% of people that would benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy can access them, warns the WHO as it releases its inaugural guidance on the medications.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently obese, it is advocating for broader and more equitable access to GLP-1 medication.

According to projections, over two billion will be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidance acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be managed with holistic and ongoing treatment," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are major obstacles to widespread access to the treatments that can help people shift significant body mass, says the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Even in the present most favorable outlook, the manufacturing of such drugs could only cover around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.

The recommendation urges countries and companies to increase availability, via approaches including patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the core component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Jabs Work

The injections mimick a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and increase the sense of being full so people eat less.

Individuals usually see weight reduction within a few weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Studies indicates patients may put most of the weight back on within a year of halting the drug, when their typical appetite resume.

To be above a healthy weight increases your chance for experiencing medical conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain cancers.

Obesity impacts people in every country and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
